Description: Residential and commercial real estate is fundamental to bank lending and has become increasingly important as an asset class for investment banks and hedge funds. Its role at the centre of the financial system was highlighted by the 200809 financial crisis where problems in that sector led to the largest global recession since the great depression. This module aims to provide students with concepts and techniques for analysing real estate investment and financing decisions. The module covers mortgages and debt securitisation (secondary mortgages and mortgagebacked securities like CDO's), real estate investment appraisal and risk assessment, financial leverage in real estate, and alternative financing and investment vehicles, such as real estate investment trusts (REITs).

It covers the following topics: introduction to information systems; types of information system; uses of information systems; information systems in e-commerce and e-business; information system design and development; information systems within and between organisations; case studies of business information systems; the human factor in information systems; legal and ethical issues in information systems.

Description: This module is designed for fourth year MEng and for MSc students. It will be taught alongside DEN320 Environmental Engineering and so will contain all of the materials on that module. Students should refer to the description of DEN320 for details of this part of the course. Additional lectures will be provided on advanced numerical environmental modelling including risk analysis, decision theory, probabilities and Monte-Carlo simulation. Students will complete a group project which will involve some of these more advanced analysis and modelling techniques.

Description: This module allows third-year undergraduates with suitable background to take one of the 30-credit MSci projects in a simplified form as a 15-credit project, although some MSci projects may not be available as third-year projects. The list of available MSci projects and supervisors is available on the School of Mathematical Sciences website. You will be accepted onto this module only after agreement between your adviser, the MSci project coordinator and the project supervisor.
I am able to supervise students on a wide range of topics in my areas of research interest. I particularly welcome proposals relating to foundational issues in bioethics, such as questions surrounding issues of death and dying, genetics and reproductive ethics, harm, personal identity, matters relating to extended decision-making (e.g. the limits of autonomy, advance directives, proxy consent), and the analysis of concepts in bioethics.
Description: Feminist Film Philosophy examines the relationships between feminist thinkers and film from a variety of perspectives. Tracing the history of women's critical writing about film in terms of aesthetics, ethics, politics and filmmaking, the module develops a sustained engagement between women and conceptual, philosophical questions prompted by film. This will range from Maya Deren and Virginia Woolf, to Luce Irigaray and Iris Murdoch; Kathleen Collins and Sally Potter, to bell hooks and Audre Lorde. The module will draw on a range of filmmakers , feminisms and philosophers in order to explore the various ways in which philosophy and film can be brought together to create a distinctive strand of feminist film philosophy.
Description: Students will be engaged in a self-initiated project of some weight; evolving their own practice and producing new and meaningful design work. Students will be expected to produce design work, which is appropriately contextualised and also produced to high professional standard. The student will experience the critical decision making in the design development process and learn to synthesize knowledge and understanding gained from previous modules in design and engineering. They will also demonstrate project management skills and how creative design work is produced.
